Gruffalo, Where Are You?
A felt flaps book
Author: Julia Donaldson
Ilustrator: Axel Scheffler
Publisher: Pan Macmillan
Target audience: Babies
Format: Board book (10 pages)
As this is aimed at babies, there is a lot less background clutter than in the full story book. It's not perfect, however, with the fox and the snake, in particular, really suffering from too complex backgrounds. What's nice about it is that the flaps are felt, making it a more interesting tactile experience, as well as increasing its durability.
To modify this book, I'm in the process of doing the following:
I've used a colour photocopier to make a slightly larger copy of each of the five characters. I've then laminated them (in matt), cut them out, and gone over outlines with a black marker pen.
I'll then cover over each of the background pages with cream cardboard, before blue tacking the laminated characters back into their original positions.
This way, I've got slightly larger images that can be moved and wriggled around in order to spark visual interest, with nice plain backgrounds (but without having to go the trouble of making cut-outs or painting out backgrounds).
